Welcome to Monte Rio Union School District!

Monte Rio Union School District is a one-school district located along Hwy116 and the beautiful Russian River. When you first set your eyes on Monte Rio School you will know this is a special place to learn. Our school facility was designed and built using our natural redwood and sits harmoniously among the natural setting of the lush Russian River Valley in West Sonoma County. Our campus combines state-of-the-art technology in the classroom with an appreciation for learning about our natural world in our Environmental Education Site.

Monte Rio Union School serves approximately 100 students in grades from Kindergarten-Eighth Grade. STAR Preschool also resides on site – a privately run preschool offering education and childcare for children from 2.9 years – Pre-kindergarten. Students at Monte Rio USD benefit from our dedication to keeping small class sizes (approximately 20 students per class) at all grades. Our teaching staff is phenomenal and has remained consistent for years, providing solid continuity for our students. We also employ an excellent team of paraeducators who work with the teaching staff to address students’ individual academic needs. West County Community Services provides a high quality after-school program on campus that offers homework help, enrichment activities, healthy snacks and transportation home. All these factors together add up to a tremendously successful school program for our children.

Education in the Arts is considered essential at MRUSD. We hire Music, Theater, and Fine Arts specialists to provide our students with a rich education in the Arts. Older students are provided with instruments and given free lessons in instruments such as: keyboard, horns, percussion, recorders, guitar, and base. Our younger students benefit from an Orf Music Program weekly, which employs music to teach developmental skills and essential early childhood education standards.

At Monte Rio Union School we seek to nurture students in both body and mind. To achieve this end, our Food Service Director collaborates with our Garden & Nutrition Teacher to expose students to a wide array of fresh fruits and vegetables. Students grow and taste their veggies in the school garden, and then bring their harvest to our school kitchen where our talented cook transforms the fresh bounty into our school lunches. Some of our favorite dishes are Warm Spinach Salad with Pear & Toasted Almonds, and Taco Bar with lots of fresh fixings from the garden like greens, guacamole and salsa.

Monte Rio Union School District’s recipe for success has been a dedicated staff, a supportive community, strong leadership from the MRUSD School Board and administration, and the friendly and caring approach to learning that helps students feel safe and confident enough to strive to reach their fullest potential. Our STAR test scores attest to the fact that our educational program is a success. Since I arrived at Monte Rio Union School in 2008, our test scores have remained in the 800’s and risen each year. Our latest score of 853, puts us among the highest achieving schools in the State! Go, Tigers!!
